They don't hope for it, this goes unsaid, but they get their orders to go down range (slang for overseas ;) ) and all they can hope for is a safe trip home and to possibly make a difference in this mess that is happening. The sad truth is that young men such as the one on your neighboring town, only got the safe trip home and not the one he was expecting.
